During his early years, Smith attended historically black university, Winston Salem State after spending a year at the Fashion Institute of Technology. While at WSSU, he played basketball on scholarship, became a member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., and also wrote an article on why his CURRENT coach should retire. That in itself just shows how authentic, and ballsy he would be as a sports journalist and I believe those two qualities have helped propel him to the top of his profession.
