Life Under the Law As a Black Man

This class has been very enlightening. I've always told myself that I need to educate myself on the in's and out's of the law, to protect myself. I just never took the initiative to do so. This class has forced me to take an entry level approach to the law to educate myself, and I have really come to appreciate that. A Netflix Original series was just released entitled "When They See Us." This series was a reenactment of the tragic fate five Harlem natives faced when they found themselves in the wrong place, at the wrong time at the time of Trisha Meili's rape.

They were wrongfully accused of raping this young white woman and were sentenced to multiple years in prison, reaching up to 13 years. 13 years in prison for a crime that they did not commit. At the time of their trial, they all were between the ages of 13 and 16, so it is no surprise to me that they were ignorant when it came to their rights. But had they known their rights, they might not have ended up in the position they were in. The system took advantage of five young, innocent black men. Not I. I will continue to educate myself on the law, as I have much more to learn since it is such a broad topic. I refuse to let myself end up in a similar situation.
